A different approach to educating boys

Founded by AFL footballer Alex Rance and Luke Surace, the aim of the The Academy is to challenge the education system’s 'one size fits all’ approach. 

40% of students are currently disengaged in their school and three years ago The Academy set out to bring a modern, effective way of learning to Australia’s young men, seeking to prepare boys for a future that’s built on their passion.

The curriculum at The Academy is tailored in a way that allows students to take a proactive approach to their education. Designed for more practical learners (largely athletes), they're proving that a real-world education is the key to success.

Students are able to align their education with their passion for AFL, the curriculum is all contextualised around AFL. Including a mix of on-field and in-classroom lesson, The Academy aims to re-engage students that have disengaged with the standard schooling system.

Students graduate with a Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) and while some pursue sporting careers  they are also set up to explore other pathways such as apprenticeships, or university. 

The Academy is transitioning to an independent school model. The establishment and operation of the Academy as a school is subject to registration being granted by the VRQA.

The Academy has developed an Athletic Profiling Database which tracks students progress daily based on their fatigue levels muscle soreness, sleep and overall happiness – to assist in student development and help prevent burnout. 

All lessons are developed with the lens of assisting students in developing a high performance mindset and resilience, which can be applied regardless of their chosen field.

Classes are capped at 25 to ensure adequate time with their lead teacher (who is consistent throughout their journey) something the team feel is vital.

Currently operating in Essendon, a second campus is set to open in Geelong in 2020, with the view of expanding across the country in the years to come.
