By 2050, half of all children in Australia will be home schooled. This slightly bold forecast comes as increasing numbers of families opt for alternative education pathways due to rising concerns about traditional schooling.
Home schooling is evolving to modern schooling which encompasses home-schooling, tutoring and AI. We are already seeing an increase in home schooling as parents grow dissatisfied with the poor standard of education, issues like bullying, social problems and a lack of sufficient support and attention for their children.
Home schooling is no longer a situation where children are isolated at home and learning limited content, it is now a sophisticated system that offers the highest levels of education. It really is modern schooling.
“Home schooling is now considered a high-calibre form of learning because it provides a personalised and flexible approach to education that addresses the unique needs of students and families. It allows parents to tailor lessons to their child’s strengths, weaknesses and interests. This personalised approach ensures that students receive a deeper understanding of subjects and can progress at their own pace, leading to higher levels of mastery compared to traditional classroom settings.
“It also prioritises more than just academics. It often incorporates life skills, creative pursuits and hands-on learning experiences, fostering well-rounded development. Parents can design curricula that emphasise critical thinking, problem-solving and emotional intelligence,” says Michael Black, founder and CEO of Success Tutoring.
Home schooling families can leverage a wide array of resources, including online courses, AI tools, virtual tutoring and local co-op groups. These resources often provide access to specialised learning opportunities that might not be available in traditional schools.
Right now, an estimated 45,000 plus students in Australia will be home schooled.
“AI tools, such as ChatGPT, are already empowering children to ask questions, seek information and address educational needs quickly and without bias,” says Black.
“We have observed a surge in parents enrolling their children in tutoring services, complementing home schooling with personalised academic support.
“Home schooling allows parents to tailor educational content to their child's learning style, pace and interests, ensuring more effective outcomes compared to one-size-fits-all classrooms."
Research shows that home schooled students achieve better educational outcomes, so it works and works very well.
Concerns about bullying, peer pressure and safety in traditional schools are driving parents to create supportive and nurturing environments at home. Why expose your child to risk when they can learn at home and collaborate with others across the home-schooling ecosystem?
Dissatisfaction with the quality of traditional education, including limited resources and outdated curricula, is encouraging parents to seek alternatives that provide more robust academic foundations.
“Simply put, parents can deliver higher standards of teaching with all the necessary supports.
“Home-schooling offers a flexible schedule, enabling families to spend more time together, integrate life skills into education and adapt to unique family needs. What could be better? Children are learning in a loving environment and in a way that fits with the family’s overall needs and circumstances.
“Advances in technology are making home schooling easier and more accessible. AI-powered tools, online learning platforms and collaborative learning environments across the home-schooling ecosystem allow children to access high-quality education from anywhere,” Black said.
Education is changing and modernising. The old system of students going to school every day for long hours and having to learn content regardless of its value is no longer something parents want to deal with.
