The annual Write a Book in a Day competition run by independent national charity, The Kids’ Cancer Project, is underway and there’s only a couple of weeks left to enter.
Registrations opened on Friday 1 May 2020 and writing days are from Monday 1 June – 30 September 2020
Registered teams will be given a brief and just 12 hours to write, illustrate and submit a storybook of up to 5000 words. Digital versions of the books will be distributed to children undergoing treatment in hospitals across the country.
The team competition has now evolved to provide a virtual experience so students can put their creative problem-solving skills to the test while practicing safe social distancing.
While Write a Book in a Day gives students the opportunity to develop skills that will set them up for life - such as teamwork, problem-solving and leadership, they are also required to raise funds to help kids with many different types of cancer.
Last year over 1100 teams participated, raising more than $475,000 for scientific research through The Kids’ Cancer Project.
But the real value-add is that young participants raise money and give to a cause that is relevant to them as Col Reynolds OAM, founder of the charity, explained.
“This pandemic hasn’t pressed pause on childhood cancer. In many ways it has made the situation for children and families affected more precarious.”
“We’re determined to keep up the momentum of scientific discovery and all the students involved in Write a Book in a Day this year are going to do just that,” said Reynolds.
