Be secure that what you are doing in class is backed by evidence.

Five new teaching practice guides that provide teachers and school leaders with practical, evidence-based strategies to enhance student learning outcomes are now available.

The guides from The Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) cover:
• Guiding student learning and gradually removing supports (‘Scaffold practice’)
• Regularly revisiting and reviewing students’ learning (‘Revisit and review’)
• Spacing and varying tasks for guided and independent student practise (‘Vary practice’)
• Teaching the connections between simpler concepts before increasing in complexity (‘Organise knowledge’)
• Providing challenging opportunities for students to apply, extend and demonstrate mastery of their learning (‘Extend and challenge’).

The guides combine rigorous research with practical classroom strategies, helping teachers and school leaders put effective practices in place that work for all students. The guides form part of AERO's comprehensive Model of Learning and Teaching, with additional guides and supporting videos set to be released in early 2025.

"These guides represent our commitment to bridging the gap between education research and classroom practice,’ said AERO CEO, Dr Jenny Donovan. ‘By providing teachers and school leaders with accessible information about evidence-based teaching strategies, we're supporting them to make informed decisions that positively impact student learning.

“Many teachers and leaders may already be familiar with these approaches, but these new guides not only provide reassurance that the practices work, they also detail practical strategies for applying them in the classroom.”

The guides are available now for free on the AERO website. For more information, visit edresearch.edu.au/model-learning-teaching
