How to harness Sphero

Sphero products of are of exceptional quality, highly adaptable and plenty of fun to use. I use Sphero SPRK+ across multiple age groups. Little Learners (Pre-Prep) used the technology to experience robotics first-hand. In Prep the students made Sphero puppets.

As part of their investigation of recyclable materials, the children designed Sphero costumes and I collated the responses and gathered needed materials for their construction. I return the student plans to each participant and the class started building their designs. Many students created caterpillars and they had a lot of fun.

In Year 1, the students showed understanding of prepositional language by driving Sphero under swings, around slides, under bridges, beside chairs, beneath tables, etc. The students also were introduced to block coding and programmed the Sphero to travel in two dimensional shapes. Year 3 were involved in creating Sphero Battle Bots.

In Year 5, the students investigated properties and characteristics of light. With acquired knowledge they used Sphero to model light attributes. I use Sphero in Year 8 by middle school students using the spherical robot as a super motor to propel a Lego vehicle. The challenge is for the Sphero to not come in contact with the ground.

I have also conducted numerous school fete activities using Sphero. The devices have also been used during Staff PD and Cyber Safety Week. I also use Little Bits a lot and this company was recently acquired by Sphero.
