A fun, educational program aimed at supporting Indigenous children in making the transition from home to school, Little J & Big Cuz was the first show of its kind to focus on Indigenous kids, their culture and their ways of being.

And that originality made Little J & Big Cuz the winner of the 2018 Logie Award for ‘Most outstanding children’s program’.

The program was an ACER initiative produced in conjunction with key project partners – SNAICC, SBS, NITV, Ned Lander Media, Screen Australia, Film Victoria, Screen Tasmania and the Australian Children’s Television Foundation.

The project was conceived by Lisa Norris, now Director of the ACER Foundation, in 2008 as part of ACER’s school readiness initiative. Research shows that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in Australia are twice as likely to be identified as developmentally vulnerable, but they are only half as likely to access important early years education.

It also shows that educational TV programs can help improve children’s school readiness by building literacy and numeracy skills, cultural awareness, self-esteem and appropriate behaviours. Little J & Big Cuz, which has been translated into seven languages, has been embraced by kids and cultural groups alike and series two is now in production, to screen in 2019.
