MLC Centre wins NSW Architecture award

The MLC School Senior Centre by BVN won the William E Kemp Award for Educational Architecture in the 2020 New South Wales Architecture Awards.

It is part of the The MLC School Masterplan that establishes a framework for future development to 2030 that incorporates a new pedagogical model valuing collaborative, technology-enabled learning.

'The Centre' is the new heart of the school, comprising a glazed atrium connecting all sections of the main campus, and providing informal learning spaces, tutorial rooms, common rooms and café.

It is located at MLC School, Sydney, Rowley Street, Burwood and resulted from a wide-ranging, extensive briefing process involving site visits, external consultants and workshops with students and staff that underpinned the masterplan.

The process exposed staff and students to thinking about new paradigms for learning and an adapted campus environment which facilitates the new pedagogical model.

Insights from a prototypical learning space ‘The Enlightenment Centre’ developed during masterplanning process informed the new building’s design.

The Electrical Engineering Building by Hassell and the University of New South Wales Sir John Clancy Auditorium by Lahznimmo Architects won the Architecture award.

Bethlehem College Ashfield by Neeson Murcutt+ Neille and Meriden School Lingwood Campus by Allen Jack+Cottier received Commendations.
