Music teachers get rock star moment

The Song Room and ARIA have announced that entries for the third Telstra ARIA Music Teacher of the Year Award are now open.

Last year, Scott Maxwell, from Grant High School in South Australia had his very own rock star experience when he shared the red carpet with Australian music legends and was celebrated as the 2018 award winner. 

He was one of four music teachers from across Australia chosen as a nominee for the 2018 award. ARIA Ambassadors Guy Sebastian, Justine Clarke, Thelma Plum and Brisbane pop band, Sheppard visited their schools and helped to tell their stories.

The Telstra ARIA Music Teacher of the Year Award was introduced by ARIA, in partnership with The Song Room and Telstra, to recognise music teachers for their passion and hard work in providing Australian children with a better education and the chance to play and enjoy music.

Music and creativity help improve education standards, well-being and build a stronger connection for students to their school life. The Song Room is helping to close the education equity gap in many communities in regional, remote and metro areas through its arts learning programs run in partnership with schools.

This award is open to any teacher working on a music program in a school, kindergarten, early childhood centre, youth centre or private tuition music school in Australia. 

Anyone from around the country – from students, school administrators, to friends, neighbours and family – can nominate their music teacher.

Teacher nominations close on Monday July 1, 2019.
