Nominations are now open for the 2019 Commonwealth Bank Teaching Awards. The Awards aim to influence the future of Australian education by rewarding 12 inspiring teachers and school leaders.

Kylie Macfarlane, General Manager Corporate Responsibility at Commonwealth Bank, said the Teaching Awards, established in partnership with national education charity Schools Plus, are an important opportunity to acknowledge educators on a national stage.

“The Commonwealth Bank Teaching Awards celebrate and showcase the positive role our teachers play in the learning and development of our children – an incredibly important and often undervalued role in our communities,” Macfarlane said.

“Teachers and educators do a lot more than just teach, they often act as mentors and coaches, and the positive impact that a great teacher can make on the life of a student can be profound.”

Rosemary Conn, CEO of Schools Plus, added the Awards are an opportunity for educators to join a national alumni of education leaders and experts.

“The Awards show our appreciation for the work teachers do and shine a light on the exceptional teaching that makes the greatest difference to students and the community,” Conn said.

“As part of the Awards, each teacher and educator will be awarded with a $45,000 Fellowship. Of this, $30,000 will fund a high-impact project to be implemented at their school, with the remaining to be used on continuing professional development for these leading educators.

“The Awards are also an opportunity for recipients to collaborate with talented colleagues across the country to share leading practices in education, and be exposed to international experts.”

Applications are now open until 27 September, with winners to be announced at a ceremony in Sydney in March 2019.

The Commonwealth Bank Teaching Awards are run in partnership with Schools Plus. Launched in 2016, the Awards are run annually to recognise and support 12 teachers and school leaders across Australia with a $45,000 Teaching Fellowship.

Schools Plus is a national charity that helps close the education gap caused by disadvantage. Carefully targeted funding allows schools and teachers to give students extra support, or to trial new ways to improve learning. Schools Plus was established in 2013, bringing to life a recommendation in the 2011 Review of Funding for Schooling (Gonski Review). More than 4600 schools across Australia are eligible for tax-deductible donations through Schools Plus.
