Heavy hitters join forces with QELi for national Deep Learning Lab

QELi is partnering with thought leaders Michael Fullan, Joanne McEachen and Joanne Quinn of New Pedagogies for Deep Learning, and the Queensland North Coast Region New Pedagogies for Deep Learning Coalition of Schools to bring the Deep Learning Lab to Brisbane on Wednesday 9 and Thursday 10 October 2019.

The Deep Learning Lab, to be held at Brisbane’s Howard Smith Wharves, will bring together more than 300 New Pedagogies for Deep Learning network members and non-members from across Australia and the world, for two-days of deep learning thought leadership and collaborative conversations about preparing students to be future-focused, globally-engaged and equipped with the skills to respond to, and succeed, in a diverse and ever-changing world.

QELi Chief Executive Officer, Neil McDonald, said QELi is proud to be working with the Global Directors of New Pedagogies for Deep Learning and supporting the Queensland North Coast Region New Pedagogies for Deep Learning Coalition of Schools to deliver this event.

“QELi is thrilled to be supporting the Coalition of Schools to deliver this year’s Deep Learning Lab. The network of more than 40 schools wanted to welcome more delegates than ever before and recognized QELi’s expertise and ongoing success in delivering high-quality, large scale events for educators. Together, we are very much looking forward to welcoming Michael Fullan, Joanne McEachen and Joanne Quinn back to Australia,” said McDonald.

Coalition of Schools Committee Member, Kirsten Ferdinands, said the Deep Learning Lab is an opportunity for educators to come together to connect, encourage, challenge, share and celebrate the work they are doing and learn directly from the change leaders themselves.

“We cannot wait for this year’s event. With QELi’s help, we’re bringing together system, school and classroom leaders to explore how to become activators of learning by supporting and building the confidence and capacity of others to design learning experiences that cultivate student agency and build on learners’ strengths and needs. "said Ferdinands.

Global Capacity Building Director, Joanne Quinn said collaborating with Australian educators is always a highlight for the New Pedagogies for Deep Learning Global Directors.

“Michael, Joanne and I are very much looking forward to returning to Australia. In addition to sharing evidence-based practice through our sessions and workshops, we enjoy speaking with delegates and participating in the school and cluster led think tank presentations to witness first-hand how deep learning pedagogy practices and tools are being embedded in schools globally,” said Quinn.

“Our sessions will focus on capacity building, collective innovation and the development of deep learning conditions and outcomes at all levels of the education system. Michael Fullan will explore equity and deep learning for system change and nuance: understanding that contexts key factors in managing change. Joanne McEachen will unpack approaching wellbeing with purpose and intention by committing to the measurement of deeper learning outcomes, and I will be examining ways to cultivate a change culture that unlocks collaboration and innovation to address the challenges of today and tomorrow,” she said.

A unique element of the Deep Learning Lab is the sharing of practice by clusters and schools through interactive, engaging and empowering masterclasses and think-tanks.

“Sharing of practice is an extremely important element of the Deep Learning Lab. We are delighted to be welcoming educators from New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and New Zealand to demonstrate collaborative professionalism, ways of working and how deep learning tools are being used to lead school improvement,” said Ferdinands.

New Pedagogies for Deep Learning is a global partnership of more than 1500 schools across eight countries who collaborate as clusters and networks of schools to build knowledge and practices that develop deep learning and foster whole system change. The Deep Learning Lab offers the opportunity to learn more about New Pedagogies for Deep Learning, pose questions directly to Michael Fullan, Joanne Quinn and Joanne McEachen and meet educators from clusters and associate networks from Australia and worldwide.
